Where are you from?

Carriere, Ms

Where do you live now?

Carriere, Ms

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am 32 years young. I have always been good with my hands, so it’s no surprise that I ended up crafting for a living. I am a leatherworker, and to me, this is the dream job. I focus mostly on making bags, wallets, and belts for everyone all over the world!

What’s your eye story?

Long story short, I was 2 years old chasing my cat outside while my 12-year-old brother was chopping down trees with a machete. My cat ran behind my brother, who had no idea I was even outside let alone behind him, at the same time as he reared back for a power swing. The tip of the machete accidentally sliced me across my face and cut my eyeball in half in the process.

What has been the hardest thing mentally?

Having and maintaining self-love. Coming to the realization that nobody gives a f*ck about my "handicap" as I do. We are our own worst enemies. Throw a visual impairment on top of that and we can fall into dark, negative places. However, the reality is, that most people like scars! Most people I’ve encountered are genuinely interested in our stories! People don't view us as different as we think. I’ve found that we are usually the ones who end up having distorted thoughts about how others will view and treat us. Don’t let this nonsense keep you from living your life to the fullest!

What has been the hardest thing physically?

I have been without my eye for as long as I can remember and have adapted well. I don't even feel or notice I have a handicap.

Where are you now in your recovery?

I’m at a stage of focusing on self-love and respect. It's a mental game that’s worth the practice.

What piece of advice would you give to someone going through their eye impairment journey?

It's hard for me to give advice seeing as so many people usually enter this journey later in life. I would tell them that they are perfect the way they are. Having two eyes so you can “fit in” and “be normal” is overrated!

Who is your eye surgeon and ocularist?

I think his name was Dr. Christopher Cooley.
